NGO battles the waves all alone
No BMC lifeguards on Juhu beach
Kunal Purohit
Juhu beach, one of the most popular tourist spots in the suburbs, is under the spotlight again. Now that the monsoons have begun, so has the threat of high tide lashing away lives. The beach has five lifeguards, in case of an emergency. However, none of these five are BMC-appointed lifeguards. In fact, these five lifeguards have been deputed by an NGO called ‘The Sea Guardian Lifeguards’. Said S Kanojia, founder-president, “We have been stationed at nine spots between Juhu and Versova. We are working here, all alone, totally voluntarily.” The volunteers consists of Kolis and local swimmers, who are stationed on these nine spots between 6 am to noon and then 2 pm to 6 pm. Even though an NGO has appointed lifeguards on this stretch so that lives could be saved, the BMC’s own lifeguards are missing.
